What is Elimination Communication?

Elimination Communication (EC) is an ancient practice of tuning in to a baby's elimination patterns and signals and responding to the baby's needs.  In this way, babies can live diaper-free!  Might sound crazy at first, but it's truly a beautiful thing!  Ingrid Bauer is an expert in the field - read more on her website.

Nighttime poop

It's 5:20am and Elie is wide awake :(

But the good news is that, about an hour ago, he peed and when I tried to put the diaper back on him, he cried like he didn't want it on, so I checked to see if he had to potty again and he pooped! It was the most obvious poop signal I've seen so far!

Elie & Yoav peed outside together

Today we were outside at the playground when Elie woke up from a nap. He was calm for about 15 minutes and then started crying to pee (he was just wearing Gerber training undies, so I knew he was dry). The Stuy Town bathrooms were closed and we were too far from our apartment to get there quickly/easily (with Yoav and a friend - it could take an hour to get that distance LOL). So I moved over to an area with some dirt and got Elie out of the wrap and got his pants off. Meanwhile, Yoav decided he needed to pee and he pulled down his pants. Elie and Yoav peed at the exact same time into the dirt. I wish I could have gotten a photo.

Nights

Our nights have been going really smoothly. We've gone several nights in a row with no misses. I also just started Elie on the Bjorn insert on the regular toilet. It seems to catch the pee much better and, of course, is so easy with poops!!

Trouble with poops

I just posted this to my EC group:

I'm having trouble catching poops... The ones I *do* catch are either soon after a pee and then I get them b/c Elie (3.5 mos) doesn't quite seem done after peeing, so I leave him on to see if he has poop, or he has some gas first and I catch those. But lately, I often can tell he needs to poop (by feeling some rumbling in his tummy) only about a second or so before the poop comes out. Literally, I'll say, "I think he needs to poop" and then the poop comes before I can do anything. For pees, he'll often cry if I don't catch the early signals and can hold pee for quite a while now (maybe 15 mins) and will cry while I'm running to a place to pee him, but not with the poop... Is that common? Is it harder for him to control/hold the poop? Thoughts?

Poop miss

We had a poop miss today at Whole Foods. Elie went 4 hours without peeing and peed in the bathroom at Whole Foods (and was crying as we were walking to the bathroom b/c he needed to pee - he didn't want to nurse), but then when we got downstairs, he pooped in the diaper without any signal that I could perceive and didn't even cry about the poopy diaper :(

I went all day without writing any times/notes down to see how well I could recognize signals without help. We were miss free for most of the day. I think I had one pee miss and the poop miss plus I missed a pee overnight.

Holding it...

Elie was in the Poquitos all day today. We went to music class and he stayed dry the whole time - he peed at 12:15pm at home and then again around 4:15pm when we got home. I was thinking about preventative attempt to pee either before or after class, but he was asleep before class and afterward, Yoav wanted to walk home with his new crush, so I didn't want to make them wait. Elie ended up falling asleep again on the walk to the subway and was asleep until we got home.

So far, I've missed one pee overnight - we both woke up around 2am and I tried nursing and peeing him but he didn't pee and, though I figured he could pee since he'd been asleep for 3 hours, I just went back to sleep. He was wet the next time he woke me up.

3 month update

EC Update

* Age of EC tot: 3 months

* We started at...1.5 weeks, cueing from birth

* Generally speaking we are doing...surprisingly well. I'm catching most pees and poops. We usually have 1-2 misses per day (night included). Our best was a 48 hour stretch. Elie is pooping about once a day now and peeing once or twice a night and 15ish times a day.

* How do you know your baby has to go / when do you offer baby a wee?

timing: Just after waking up; after nursing; he usually can pee about every 30 minutes if I try even without the signs below

signs: Tightened tummy muscles; Legs shifting a bit (I only notice this when he's in the wrap); Squirming; Fussing; Crying (if we don't catch the other signs); Sometimes gas for poops

* Is there a difference for poos and pees? For poops, we sometimes get gas and he is often very calm and stares into my eyes just before pooping. I can also feel the tightening of the tummy muscles more pre-poop.

* What cues do you use?

I say psshhh for both pee and poop.

* Which positions/receptacles do you use?

Insert for Baby Bjorn potty (with my hand in front to help catch the pee); tub; sink (with hand in front); sometimes toilet for poops to avoid cleaning the insert and also in a toilet when we're out; the great outdoors!. He briefly didn't want to pee into the tub, but we're back on track with that one. Seems like now he'll pee in any position.

* Nappies, training pants or other?

Poquito Pants or diaper-free.

* What are you doing away from home?

Just started using the Poquitos for away from home. I use a pair of Poquitos (size M) with Ruskovilla woolen longies (not lanolized) over. He's peed once in them (so far) when out and my shirt did get damp, but personally I want it that way so I know when we have a miss. If I bothered to lanolize the longies, I probably wouldn't get damp. I then wash the Poquitos by hand in the sink, dry in my spin dryer and hang to dry. They dry very quickly this way. He pees much less frequently when we are out, especially if he is sleeping a lot - he has gone as long as about 5 hours during the day without peeing.

* What are you doing at night?

Poquitos or diaper-free. We have a lambskin blanket, then a soft organic blanket, then a flat diaper (to protect the blanket), then a few prefolds, then baby, then another flat (to protect top blanket), then wool baby blanket. Elie wakes up a bit and shifts around when he needs to pee and nurse, which wakes me up. I keep the BB insert in the corner of the bed and use it if I'm pretty sure Yoav is sleeping soundly - if I'm worried about waking him (or if I have to pee myself), I take Elie to pee in the tub. As an example, though, last night he went to sleep at 10:30pm and only peed once in the middle of the night at 5am and then again at 7:30am.

* Who takes baby to the toilet?

Mostly me. Jeremy has done it a few times.

* Catches or Misses - how many and what times are especially interesting?

Most of our misses are when I can't easily get to a potty or when I'm completely distracted and forget that fussiness likely means he needs to pee LOL. When we have a miss, I have to try again as soon as I can get to a potty because it seems like he only partially empties his bladder with a miss. If I don't do this, we'll often have another miss 10-15 minutes later. Also, if I touch his penis or shift suddenly when peeing him, he'll sometimes stop peeing. Sometimes he can then continue right away, but sometimes I guess if he's already emptied most of his bladder, he'll wait 10-15 minutes before finishing.

* What's your next EC goal?

I want to improve on my out of the house ECing. I'm going to practice peeing him into a plastic bottle some at home so I can bring a bottle for out of the house.

* A tip for this age/stage?

Diaper-free time helps me stay in tune with Elie's elimination needs. Also, I often keep a pee/poop/nap/signal log to help me sort out patterns and just to keep track.

First outdoor pee

We met friends at a playground in Central Park today at 11am and then went to Whole Foods for lunch. Elie wore his Poquitos and was dry all night and until about 4pm when he peed while we were waiting for the subway. He peed twice outside in the grass at the playground and once in the bathroom at Whole Foods. He was wearing the Poquitos and his Rusko longies. I did get some pee on my shirt, so the Poquitos don't completely hold a pee (esp when babywearing since Elie was pressed against my tummy). The longies aren't lanolized -maybe I'll get up the energy to do that someday :)

Poquitos (again)

We made it miss-free today from 12am-6pm. We went to check out Forest Hills Gardens in Queens as a potential place to move when our lease end in June. Elie peed once in the bathroom at the real estate office. He was mostly asleep and peed and pooped as soon as we got home at 6. Jer actually peed him when we got home since I was helping Yoav.

I used the Poquitos in the morning - I really like them! Elie peed in them yesterday and I washed by hand in the sink and dried with my spin dryer and then hung dry and they were completely dry in the morning. I still miss some poops and I'd rather not get poop on them. Sounds silly since they're just training pants, but they're so cute and perfect now ;)

Here's a pic of Elie in the Poquitos:
