What is Elimination Communication?

Elimination Communication (EC) is an ancient practice of tuning in to a baby's elimination patterns and signals and responding to the baby's needs.  In this way, babies can live diaper-free!  Might sound crazy at first, but it's truly a beautiful thing!  Ingrid Bauer is an expert in the field - read more on her website.

EC Update - 8 Months

This is going to be brief in the interest of getting something posted...

EC Update

* Age of EC tot: 8 months

* We started at...1.5 weeks, cueing from birth

* Generally speaking we are doing...very well. I have to think much less about EC. I can easily go all day without a miss, even if I'm out of the house.

* How do you know your baby has to go / when do you offer baby a wee?

timing: Poops - no timing - I either hear a gas, feel tightening of tummy or he is fussy. For pees, I'm not relying nearly as much on timing anymore, other than upon waking and when I leave and arrive anywhere.

signs: Easiest signal is that in the wrap, he pushes his body away from mine; Sometimes blows raspberries; Tightened tummy muscles; Squirming; Fussing; Crying (if we don't catch the other signs); Sometimes gas for poops. He has also responded to verbal questioning - I say, "Do you need to go potty?" and he gives a big smile.

* Is there a difference for poos and pees? More discomfort before a poop, so the cueing is clearer. Only one poop miss this month - I was on the computer and he pooped on the floor. I was so engrossed, I really don't know what signals he gave prior to the miss. He was nakey butt at the time.

* What cues do you use?

I say psshhh for both pee and poop.

* Which positions/receptacles do you use?

Insert for Baby Bjorn potty (with my hand in front to help catch the pee); sitting on the Baby Bjorn insert on the regular toilet with me holding him under his arms and squatting in front of him; sink or tub (with hand in front). For out of the house: peeing into a small wetbag with a prefold inside; the great outdoors (for this, I squat down and hold Elie with his back to my tummy in the basic EC position, so it's fairly discreet)!

* Nappies, training pants or other?

During the day: Mostly naked or Gerber or Under the Nile trainers while at home. When out, I use Poquito Pants, Little Beetle training pants.

Night: Naked.

* What are you doing away from home?

Training pants - Poquito Pants or Little Beetle with Babylegs as pants.

* What are you doing at night?

Pretty much always naked now. Most nights are miss-free, but sometimes I'm just too tired and am so tired that I actually forget about EC when he stirs and we miss a pee.

* Who takes baby to the toilet?

Me and Jeremy

* Catches or Misses - how many and what times are especially interesting?

Pretty much catching all poops now (see beginning). Missing very few pees - many miss-free nights and an average of 1-2 misses a day. We do have a lot of miss-free days. Most misses occur in the morning, when frequency is greater and I'm more tired.

* What's your next EC goal?

Work on helping Elie learn the pee sign. I do it some, but I usually forget...

* A tip for this age/stage?

Frequent pottytunities; go with all instincts. RELAX! I have the fewest misses when I think the least.

Dry Night

Elie was dry from 10:30PM (when I went to sleep and peed him) until 6:30AM! I don't know if he even woke to nurse - I only know he was dry because his pee bowl was empty in the morning.

It's getting to be so easy for both of us. I've been out of the house several times recently with Elie diaperless or even naked with no backups with me.

one miss

One miss again with very little effort!

Verbal and Facial signals

We had an amazing EC day today. We went to Lee & Jen's house in Greenwich for Jeremy's aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary. So Elie was in the carrier more than normal, but we only had one miss and that was with Jeremy first thing in the morning. At one point today, I said to Elie, "Do you have to go potty?" and he smiled at me and made his little psshh sound! And he went right away when I took him! I did that again for the rest of the times today that I sensed he had to pee and got the same response!! It's so amazing to me that he can understand what I'm saying and verbalize a response to me at his age. I guess not so crazy since babies already are doing sign language at his age or a little older. Unrelated, I think he's starting to make the sign for milk as well, but I'm not sure. I've seen him do it but not sure if it's necessarily when he wants to nurse.

I used a cotton Tushies diaper a friend gave me for the car ride. It worked well - I just opened it and stuck Elie's penis out the corner and he peed onto a cloth diaper. The only problem was that the stickiness of the tab was totally gone by the end of the day. I wonder if they do that on purpose so people don't reuse the diapers? Seems weird that they can't use better tape. Or maybe usually it just isn't needed and people prefer to be able to get them off easily.

36 Hours with no miss

We went about 36 hours without a miss - Saturday evening until this morning. Last night Elie didn't even need to pee all night. I guess he peed around 6am when he stirred awake because I was dry when I first woke up and realized I was wet soon after :)

Yesterday was so easy - Elie was in the wrap most of the day because we were outside and moving around a lot. He's been verbally signally a lot, both for pee and poop. It's so cute. He puts his tongue out a tiny bit and blows lightly to try to make the psshhh sound ;) I think he gave a verbal signal about half the time yesterday.

Outdoor Nakedness and Signaling

We just went to Union Market. Elie was asleep in my mei tei on the walk over and woke up just as I was about to go in. I took him out to pee him and found that he was only wearing a shirt! I've been wearing him naked or at least diaper-free at home and hadn't even thought to check before going out :) Not such a big deal while out, I guess, but it would have been embarrassing to have a miss in the grocery store since the pee would have likely dribbled to the floor without undies on.

Speaking of misses, though, I only had one miss today and that was first thing in the morning when we were lying in bed, me dreaming of being asleep LOL. I think we have the signaling down pretty well now. Elie has been consistently blowing raspberries (or at least doing something similar to the pssshhh sound that I make - I'm still not really sure what it means to blow raspberries, but I think that's what he's doing based on other EC posts I've seen). He also makes a noise (feels like an "aahhhh"-type noise - relief) AS he's peeing. Which isn't so helpful in getting the pee in the potty except when I miss the original signal and then if I hear the during-pee signal, I can say, "Wait" and move him to the potty to finish.

Going nekkie outside

Elie is completely naked in a wrap and I'm supposed to me Jer and Yoav (who are on a walk) for breakfast in 10 minutes so I'm taking him out naked :) I usually don't wear him naked in my wraps b/c I don't want them to get peed on, but I got lazy today.

EC Update - 7 Months

EC Update

* Age of EC tot: 7 months

* We started at...1.5 weeks, cueing from birth

* Generally speaking we are doing...well. I have more misses than I did overall last month because I've been putting Elie on the floor to play more. I haven't quite figured out his signals when he's on the move. He makes a noise when he's a second from peeing, but it's not usually enough time for me to recognize the signal AND get him to the potty fast enough. He's mostly diaper-free at home, though, so Jeremy thinks if we put undies on him more at home, he might signal stronger and wait for the potty more. We haven't missed a poop in a while - offhand, I can't remember the last miss and I don't currently have any poopy undies, which means it's been at least since camping - oh, now I remember, the last miss was on our camping trip, a week from yesterday - I was holding Elie naked at the car in the potty position after he'd peed and he pooped on me - same mistake I made last month! I should have realized he needed to poop that time because, when he's done, he usually turns around to start moving away (not that he actually can, since I'm holding him) and that time he stayed in the potty position after he peed.

* How do you know your baby has to go / when do you offer baby a wee?

timing: Poops - Still not using timing anymore - it's definitely not at the same time everyday now. Lately, he's been more likely to poop in the late afternoon, though. Well, today he pooped this morning. No regular time of day as far as I can tell. For pees, I try to offer a pottytunity about once every 30 minutes in the morning and then move to about once an hour as the day progresses. I also pee him when I pee and after bath and when I take him out of the wrap and on leaving the house and arriving anywhere .

signs: Tightened tummy muscles; Completely calm - kind of looking into space; Legs shifting a bit (I only notice this when he's in the wrap); Squirming; Fussing; Crying (if we don't catch the other signs); Sometimes gas for poops; gumming the nipples when nursing; clearly not wanting to nurse when he's tired and would otherwise nurse to sleep - he'll kind of twist his head away from me. He is making verbal signals for poops - he's developed his signal into a more sshhhh sound and it's usually accompanied by a proud smile when he's doing it as a potty signal.

* Is there a difference for poos and pees? More discomfort before a poop, so the cueing is clearer. He hasn't pooped in trainers in a long time (ever since I started with just trainers?) so obviously the signal is clear enough for me to recognize it.

Most nights are miss-free, but sometimes I'm just too tired and am too slow to respond. A few nights ago, Elie was nursing and nursing and nursing and finally I woke up enough to think maybe he needed to pee, I peed him and he literally fell asleep as his body hit the lambskin ;)

* Who takes baby to the toilet?

Me and Jeremy

* Catches or Misses - how many and what times are especially interesting?

Pretty much catching all poops now (see beginning). Missing very few pees - many miss-free nights and an average of a few pee misses a day - usually while he's playing and I'm cooking/cleaning or playing with Yoav and not paying close enough attention. Looking at last month, I see I don't have the morning miss anymore because the kids have been either waking at the same time, or I stay in bed with Elie - I'm not leaving him in bed alone anymore - the only time he's in bed without me is at night with Yoav and since they're both there, the warmth of eachother helps them both to sleep better - they rarely wake during that period.

* What's your next EC goal?

Goal is to keep working on the pee signals while Elie is out-of-arms.

* A tip for this age/stage?

Frequent pottytunities; go with all instincts.

Elie's Verbal Cueing

Elie's verbal cue has suddenly (since yesterday) really improved! Yesterday and for the week or so before, he was sticking his tongue out and blowing almost in the "Nanny Nanny Boo Boo" way LOL. Tonight when I was walking him to sleep, he held my cheek with his hand (the way Yoav used to do when he was a little older) and tried a few times at a "psshh" (and pooped right away when I put him on the potty). He certainly got close enough that if he continues it'll be even easier to catch poops! Hopefully he'll start doing it for pees - so far, I think he's just doing a verbal cue for poops.

6 Month Update

EC Update

* Age of EC tot: 6 months

* We started at...1.5 weeks, cueing from birth

* Generally speaking we are doing...very well. The ECing is becoming much more natural for me - I don't have to think about it so much to be miss-free (or close to it). I've gotten much better with poops since last month and rarely miss a poop now - I only missed one poop in the past three weeks and that was once when I was randomly holding Elie naked in the potty position walking around the house LOL - I've been careful since then only to hold him like that when I'm pottying him :) He's pooping on average once a day now and even missed a day once recently. Oh, and I did give up diapers, so we've been diaper-free for a month - we're just using cloth training pants now (no covers, no PUL).

* How do you know your baby has to go / when do you offer baby a wee?

timing: Poops I'm not using timing anymore - I don't think it's been at the same time everyday now that he's moving to one poop a day. For pees, I try to offer a pottytunity about once every 30 minutes in the morning and then move to about once an hour as the day progresses. I also pee him when I pee and after bath.

signs: Tightened tummy muscles; Completely calm - kind of looking into space; Legs shifting a bit (I only notice this when he's in the wrap); Squirming; Fussing; Crying (if we don't catch the other signs); Sometimes gas for poops; gumming the nipples when nursing; clearly not wanting to nurse when he's tired and would otherwise nurse to sleep - he'll kind of twist his head away from me. He is making verbal signals for poops - he sticks out his tongue and blows. I think he just does it for poops.

* Is there a difference for poos and pees? For poops, Elie is now doing a verbal signal. The gumming of the nipples is also more common and intense as a poop cue. And general unhappiness/fussiness when he needs to poop.

During the day: Poquito Pants, Little Beetle training pants, Gerber or Under the Nile training pants or diaper-free.
Night: Naked.

* What are you doing away from home?

Training pants - Poquito Pants or Little Beetle with Babylegs as pants.

* What are you doing at night?

Pretty much always naked now. Most nights are miss-free, but sometimes I'm just too tired and am too slow to respond to cues and the sheet and lambskin blanket end up a soggy mess to wash...

* Who takes baby to the toilet?

Mostly me. Jeremy does it some.

* Catches or Misses - how many and what times are especially interesting?

Pretty much catching all poops now - haven't missed a poop in two weeks. Missing very few pees - many miss-free nights and an average of maybe one miss during the day. The most common miss is when he wakes up in the morning, because I've been leaving him in bed while I make breakfast, so he often wakes up and pees before I can get to him.

* What's your next EC goal?

Goal is to learn the new signals that will hopefully come as Elie starts to crawl more and be out of my arms more.

* A tip for this age/stage?

Diaper-free or training pants instead of diapers helps to tune in.

Verbal Signal?

Elie might have given a verbal signal tonight. I was putting him to sleep and he was 99% asleep but a little fidgety and I thought it was because he wasn't comfortable in the wrap and wanted to lie down. So I put him down on his tummy in the moses basket and he seemed like he might fall asleep, but then he started "blowing raspberries" (kind of blowing a noise with his tongue). I took him out and he peed. We'll see...

1 Week with no Poop Misses

So I made it the one week. No pee misses overnight. My only pee miss was (again) when Elie shifted in the carrier during a nap and woke up enough to pee. He also peed once right on Jeremy when he was standing on Jeremy's legs facing him diaper-free :) He hasn't peed on me in a long time. Not sure why it's happened to Jeremy twice in the past week.

Poops

Still no poop misses since last Wednesday. I did laundry today and there were no diapers in the wetbag for the first time! I've just been putting the pee undies in the regular laundry basket. Very exciting - one more day for a week. Probably shouldn't write that - I don't want to jinx it...

I haven't missed a nighttime pee in a while too. Seems like about the same amount of time - definitely close to a week. Daytime misses are 1-2. Today was 1. He semi-woke up for a few seconds to pee during a long nap in the mei tei while we were at Trader Joe's.

Krazy City

We went to another birthday party at Krazy City today. This was the first public toilet Elie pottied in and today he peed and pooped there again. It brought back memories :)

Poops

I just want to keep track of poop misses because we have so few lately. The last miss was on Wednesday, which I wrote about in the previous post. I'm going to see how long it is between poop misses. Seems like I have to be pretty dense to miss a poop. Most of the time, I can't even tell he has to go - he just does when he gets a pottytunity. Like today, we went to a birthday party in NJ from 10-1. He pooped once while we were there in the toilet when I took him (he hadn't signaled to poop) and then he just pooped when we got home - also no distress/poop signaling.

No more diapers

So I'm officially going diaper-free. I'm only going to use trainers and undies from now on. I started actually about a week ago and it's going fine. The past two days were really smooth with maybe one nighttime miss and one daytime miss. Today was worse - I missed a pee at LLL (I was cueing him to pee in a disposable, then when he didn't go, I stupidly put his trainer back on and nursed him and he peed as he was nursing), then I missed one when he woke up while we were waiting for the subway (I knew he needed to pee and bounced him a bit but couldn't get him to wait long enough - I wouldn't even have been able to pee him on the subway since we only had two stops - guess I could have peed him while waiting and just missed the train and waited for the next one, but I don't like being down in the subway...), then he peed once on Jeremy. He pooped about four times today though and I caught them all. I think the only poop I missed this week was Wednesday at night he was a little fussy as he was falling asleep in the wrap and came off the breast and I just thought he was gassy from over-nursing. Since he hasn't pooped late at night in a long time, I didn't even think it could be a poop. He finally pooped in the trainer and, in hindsight, he was definitely giving me clear signals, I was just letting timing get in the way of my ability to understand the signals...

So I've been doing Gerber and Under the Nile cloth trainers at home (day and night) and the Little Beetle and Poquitos out of the house.

Just a note about the poops - it seems like mostly he doesn't really signal for the poops, he just poops when he gets a pottytunity. Except in the morning - he often wakes up because he needs to poop and will frequently poop immediately upon waking and getting a pottytunity.

No misses - using signals

We had a miss free day so far (it's 7:15PM) today and I didn't look at my watch at all to help on the ECing! It's the first day I've gone miss free relying completely on signals. I can't really say what all the signals are, though. Some are very subtle and I can't even verbalize what they are, but they catch my attention and I get Elie on the potty. We were home all day, so that makes signals a lot easier since he was naked most of the day with a potty close at hand, so it's easy to go from signal to potty...

Signals

Elie has been making some verbal signals recently (past week). I haven't quite figured them out exactly, but I do catch a lot based on the signals, I just can't quite say what they are. He also sort of makes a mmmm mmm sound while pooping some. I think it starts just before. Gotta get to sleep - more later.

5 Month Update

EC Update

* Age of EC tot: 5 months

* We started at...1.5 weeks, cueing from birth

* Generally speaking we are doing...very well. The ECing is becoming much more natural for me - I don't have to think about it so much to be miss-free (or close to it). I've gotten much better with poops since last month and rarely miss a poop now. He's only pooping twice a day now, which helps a lot!

* How do you know your baby has to go / when do you offer baby a wee?

timing: Just after waking up (poop-wise, he generally poops within an hour of waking in the morning and again within an hour of waking from his afternoon nap); he usually can pee about every 30 minutes in the morning and every hour or so in the afternoon if I try even without the signs below. I also pee him whenever I go pee (I sit him in front of me on the toilet) and after bath.

signs: Tightened tummy muscles; Completely calm - kind of looking into space; Legs shifting a bit (I only notice this when he's in the wrap); Squirming; Fussing; Crying (if we don't catch the other signs); Sometimes gas for poops; gumming the nipples when nursing; clearly not wanting to nurse when he's tired and would otherwise nurse to sleep - he'll kind of twist his head away from me. He has also started making verbal signals, but I don't know them well enough to verbalize yet. He's also started saying "mm mm" as he pees/poops sometimes.

* Is there a difference for poos and pees? For poops, we sometimes get gas and he is often very calm and stares into my eyes just before pooping. I can also feel the tightening of the tummy muscles more pre-poop. The gumming of the nipples is also more common and intense as a poop cue. And general unhappiness/fussiness when he needs to poop.

For out of the house: holding over a toilet with hand over penis, peeing into a prefold or disposable; the great outdoors!

* Nappies, training pants or other?

During the day: Poquito Pants, Little Beetle training pants, Gerber or Under the Nile training pants or diaper-free.
Night: Motherease diaper without cover or naked. I keep him naked some at night when I'm too lazy to put a diaper on him, but if I miss, it's a bummer b/c he doesn't really stay on his lambskin blanket anymore.

* What are you doing away from home?

Training pants - Poquito Pants or Little Beetle. I only use diapers when out if I'll be embarrassed to offer him a potty (like when looking at apartments recently)

* What are you doing at night?

Gerber or UTN training undies or naked (I use the undies because they're easiest to slip on/off). Now I'm using the lambskin blanket and don't bother with the prefolds usually anymore, since he moves around so much. Elie wakes up a bit and shifts around when he needs to pee and/or nurse, which generally wakes me up. I keep the BB insert in the corner of the bed and then dump the pee into a bowl on the floor when I'm done. Sometimes Elie actually pees without nursing - I put him down when I dump the potty and he either falls immediately back to sleep or he keeps squirming if he wants to nurse. I seem to have some miss-free nights or maybe one miss and other nights with all misses based on how tired I am, I presume.

* Who takes baby to the toilet?

Mostly me. Jeremy does it some.

* Catches or Misses - how many and what times are especially interesting?

The poop catches are going really smoothly. Seems like if I give him enough time on the potty soon after waking in the morning and again after nap, he'll poop.

* What's your next EC goal?

Want to improve my out-of-home ECing. I find it particularly hard to get back on track once I have a miss, since a miss is never a full emptying of the bladder, so there's another pee coming 5-10 mins later and usually another 5-10 mins after that, which is really hard to manage when I'm out and about.

* A tip for this age/stage?

Diaper-free or training pants instead of diapers helps to tune in.

Public ECing

It wasn't much, but I peed Elie before and after we shopped at Trader Joe's today in the little entranceway of the store. I just peed him into a disposable diaper. We have a pack from my FIL that we've never used on Elie, but I use for ECing out of the house. That way, it kind of looks like I'm just changing his diaper and I feel less weird about it.

Nakey Tush & Poop Progress

Seriously, though, I really do love EC. It's been getting easier and easier. Today I felt a little tummy rumble, grabbed the potty, and Elie pooped! I'm getting much better with the poops - I'm catching around 75% I'd say. He's usually doing two a day and some days I've gotten both and some days one. Today, actually, Elie pooped FIVE times and we (Jer caught one) caught all of them!!!

Poops

I'm doing much better with poops lately. Elie's been pooping twice a day, once pretty soon after he wakes in the morning and again within about half an hour of waking from his afternoon nap. Being aware of the timing has helped a lot, since I really just need to focus on poop signals during those times. And I think I wasn't holding him on the potty long enough (and had some poop misses) before which (in addition to the coffee) was increasing his poops/day. Now we're consistently at 2 poops a day.

I also have been peeing him into a disposable diaper when we're out of the house, which is working really well. The best thing is that it just looks like I'm changing his diaper so I don't feel self-conscious.

New signal

A new signal I've figured out is that Elie sort of bites down w his gums on my nipples when he needs to poop and sometimes even I think when he needs to pee (unless he also needs to poop those times and I just don't leave him on the potty long enough). We've also been doing better with poops in terms of regularity. Elie's been pooping only twice a day since I stopped drinking coffee - once in the morning, usually as soon as he's really up and again usually sometime in the afternoon. So that, as well as discovering the new signal, is helping me to now catch most poops.

4 Month Update

EC Update

* Age of EC tot: 4 months

* We started at...1.5 weeks, cueing from birth

* Generally speaking we are doing...pretty well. I'm missing more than I was last month, but it's because I'm out of the house more and definitely have a hard time ECing when we're out. I'm also not writing down times anymore and have been trying to use signals as much as possible instead of timing (when I can). Elie is pooping more now for some reason - generally 3-4 times a day. Seems like he briefly was pooping 1-2 times a day, but has been at 3-4 for several weeks now.

* How do you know your baby has to go / when do you offer baby a wee?

timing: Just after waking up; after nursing; he usually can pee about every 30 minutes if I try even without the signs below. Poop is generally upon waking in the morning, once again an hour or so later, once or twice in the afternoon.

signs: Tightened tummy muscles; Legs shifting a bit (I only notice this when he's in the wrap); Squirming; Fussing; Crying (if we don't catch the other signs); Sometimes gas for poops; I just figured out two new poop signals: If he's nursing when he needs to poop, he'll bite and twist my nipple. If he's not nursing, he'll sometimes seem to be trying to nurse, but putting his mouth further back, similar to his sign of being ready to nap.

* Is there a difference for poos and pees? For poops, we sometimes get gas and he is often very calm and stares into my eyes just before pooping. I can also feel the tightening of the tummy muscles more pre-poop. And the two new signals mentioned above.

* What cues do you use?

I say psshhh for both pee and poop.

* Which positions/receptacles do you use?

Insert for Baby Bjorn potty (with my hand in front to help catch the pee); sitting on the Baby Bjorn insert on the regular toilet with me holding him under his arms and squatting in front of him; sink (with hand in front); holding over the toilet when we're out; the great outdoors!.

* Nappies, training pants or other?

During the day: Poquito Pants, Little Beetle training pants, Gerber or Under the Nile training pants or diaper-free.
Night: Motherease diaper without cover. I switched to this because he moves in bed a lot now, so if he does pee, it doesn't necessarily get caught by a prefold under him.

* What are you doing away from home?

Training pants if I'm not going to be out for long or if I think I can EC where I'm going. Otherwise, I use a Motherease diaper with a prefold. And since it's still cold out, I always put Ruskovilla longies on him.

* What are you doing at night?

Motherease diaper with no cover. Now I'm using the lambskin blanket with a soft organic blanket on top. I don't bother with the prefolds usually anymore, since he moves around so much. Then an organic cotton blanket and then a wool blanket on top. Elie wakes up a bit and shifts around when he needs to pee and nurse, which wakes me up. I keep the BB insert in the corner of the bed and then dump the pee into a bowl on the floor when I'm done. I just switched to using my own blanket, so I seem to be waking Yoav up less now with the nighttime ECing. Sometimes Elie actually pees without nursing - I put him down when I dump the potty and he either falls immediately back to sleep or he keeps squirming if he wants to nurse.

* Who takes baby to the toilet?

Mostly me. Jeremy does it some.

* Catches or Misses - how many and what times are especially interesting?

I was having a lot of trouble with the poops and am still missing usually one poop a day (usually one of the afternoon ones). I used to think that sometimes he pooped suddenly or without a signal at all, but in the past few days / week, I've been really focusing on his poop signals and now only miss if I don't make the connection. Like this afternoon, he didn't want to nurse but wouldn't sit still (I was reading to Yoav) and he pooped on me. Mostly with the poops, he just can't sit/be still.

* What's your next EC goal?

Want to improve my poop catching. I'd like to catch all poops. Seems like a lot of people are able to do this. I also want to continue to improve on my out of the house ECing. I've been bringing a disposable dipe to pee him into, which works well. When I visited Jamie in Long Island a few days ago, I used the same diaper three times!

* A tip for this age/stage?

Diaper-free or my nice training pants time helps me stay in tune with Elie's elimination needs (I only have two each of Poquitos and Little Beetles for this size and don't want them to get pooped on...)

Nighttime poop

It's 5:20am and Elie is wide awake :(

But the good news is that, about an hour ago, he peed and when I tried to put the diaper back on him, he cried like he didn't want it on, so I checked to see if he had to potty again and he pooped! It was the most obvious poop signal I've seen so far!

Elie & Yoav peed outside together

Today we were outside at the playground when Elie woke up from a nap. He was calm for about 15 minutes and then started crying to pee (he was just wearing Gerber training undies, so I knew he was dry). The Stuy Town bathrooms were closed and we were too far from our apartment to get there quickly/easily (with Yoav and a friend - it could take an hour to get that distance LOL). So I moved over to an area with some dirt and got Elie out of the wrap and got his pants off. Meanwhile, Yoav decided he needed to pee and he pulled down his pants. Elie and Yoav peed at the exact same time into the dirt. I wish I could have gotten a photo.

Nights

Our nights have been going really smoothly. We've gone several nights in a row with no misses. I also just started Elie on the Bjorn insert on the regular toilet. It seems to catch the pee much better and, of course, is so easy with poops!!

Trouble with poops

I just posted this to my EC group:

I'm having trouble catching poops... The ones I *do* catch are either soon after a pee and then I get them b/c Elie (3.5 mos) doesn't quite seem done after peeing, so I leave him on to see if he has poop, or he has some gas first and I catch those. But lately, I often can tell he needs to poop (by feeling some rumbling in his tummy) only about a second or so before the poop comes out. Literally, I'll say, "I think he needs to poop" and then the poop comes before I can do anything. For pees, he'll often cry if I don't catch the early signals and can hold pee for quite a while now (maybe 15 mins) and will cry while I'm running to a place to pee him, but not with the poop... Is that common? Is it harder for him to control/hold the poop? Thoughts?

Poop miss

We had a poop miss today at Whole Foods. Elie went 4 hours without peeing and peed in the bathroom at Whole Foods (and was crying as we were walking to the bathroom b/c he needed to pee - he didn't want to nurse), but then when we got downstairs, he pooped in the diaper without any signal that I could perceive and didn't even cry about the poopy diaper :(

I went all day without writing any times/notes down to see how well I could recognize signals without help. We were miss free for most of the day. I think I had one pee miss and the poop miss plus I missed a pee overnight.

Holding it...

Elie was in the Poquitos all day today. We went to music class and he stayed dry the whole time - he peed at 12:15pm at home and then again around 4:15pm when we got home. I was thinking about preventative attempt to pee either before or after class, but he was asleep before class and afterward, Yoav wanted to walk home with his new crush, so I didn't want to make them wait. Elie ended up falling asleep again on the walk to the subway and was asleep until we got home.

So far, I've missed one pee overnight - we both woke up around 2am and I tried nursing and peeing him but he didn't pee and, though I figured he could pee since he'd been asleep for 3 hours, I just went back to sleep. He was wet the next time he woke me up.

3 month update

EC Update

* Age of EC tot: 3 months

* We started at...1.5 weeks, cueing from birth

* Generally speaking we are doing...surprisingly well. I'm catching most pees and poops. We usually have 1-2 misses per day (night included). Our best was a 48 hour stretch. Elie is pooping about once a day now and peeing once or twice a night and 15ish times a day.

* How do you know your baby has to go / when do you offer baby a wee?

timing: Just after waking up; after nursing; he usually can pee about every 30 minutes if I try even without the signs below

signs: Tightened tummy muscles; Legs shifting a bit (I only notice this when he's in the wrap); Squirming; Fussing; Crying (if we don't catch the other signs); Sometimes gas for poops

* Is there a difference for poos and pees? For poops, we sometimes get gas and he is often very calm and stares into my eyes just before pooping. I can also feel the tightening of the tummy muscles more pre-poop.

* What cues do you use?

I say psshhh for both pee and poop.

* Which positions/receptacles do you use?

Insert for Baby Bjorn potty (with my hand in front to help catch the pee); tub; sink (with hand in front); sometimes toilet for poops to avoid cleaning the insert and also in a toilet when we're out; the great outdoors!. He briefly didn't want to pee into the tub, but we're back on track with that one. Seems like now he'll pee in any position.

* Nappies, training pants or other?

Poquito Pants or diaper-free.

* What are you doing away from home?

Just started using the Poquitos for away from home. I use a pair of Poquitos (size M) with Ruskovilla woolen longies (not lanolized) over. He's peed once in them (so far) when out and my shirt did get damp, but personally I want it that way so I know when we have a miss. If I bothered to lanolize the longies, I probably wouldn't get damp. I then wash the Poquitos by hand in the sink, dry in my spin dryer and hang to dry. They dry very quickly this way. He pees much less frequently when we are out, especially if he is sleeping a lot - he has gone as long as about 5 hours during the day without peeing.

* What are you doing at night?

Poquitos or diaper-free. We have a lambskin blanket, then a soft organic blanket, then a flat diaper (to protect the blanket), then a few prefolds, then baby, then another flat (to protect top blanket), then wool baby blanket. Elie wakes up a bit and shifts around when he needs to pee and nurse, which wakes me up. I keep the BB insert in the corner of the bed and use it if I'm pretty sure Yoav is sleeping soundly - if I'm worried about waking him (or if I have to pee myself), I take Elie to pee in the tub. As an example, though, last night he went to sleep at 10:30pm and only peed once in the middle of the night at 5am and then again at 7:30am.

* Who takes baby to the toilet?

Mostly me. Jeremy has done it a few times.

* Catches or Misses - how many and what times are especially interesting?

Most of our misses are when I can't easily get to a potty or when I'm completely distracted and forget that fussiness likely means he needs to pee LOL. When we have a miss, I have to try again as soon as I can get to a potty because it seems like he only partially empties his bladder with a miss. If I don't do this, we'll often have another miss 10-15 minutes later. Also, if I touch his penis or shift suddenly when peeing him, he'll sometimes stop peeing. Sometimes he can then continue right away, but sometimes I guess if he's already emptied most of his bladder, he'll wait 10-15 minutes before finishing.

* What's your next EC goal?

I want to improve on my out of the house ECing. I'm going to practice peeing him into a plastic bottle some at home so I can bring a bottle for out of the house.

* A tip for this age/stage?

Diaper-free time helps me stay in tune with Elie's elimination needs. Also, I often keep a pee/poop/nap/signal log to help me sort out patterns and just to keep track.

First outdoor pee

We met friends at a playground in Central Park today at 11am and then went to Whole Foods for lunch. Elie wore his Poquitos and was dry all night and until about 4pm when he peed while we were waiting for the subway. He peed twice outside in the grass at the playground and once in the bathroom at Whole Foods. He was wearing the Poquitos and his Rusko longies. I did get some pee on my shirt, so the Poquitos don't completely hold a pee (esp when babywearing since Elie was pressed against my tummy). The longies aren't lanolized -maybe I'll get up the energy to do that someday :)

Poquitos (again)

We made it miss-free today from 12am-6pm. We went to check out Forest Hills Gardens in Queens as a potential place to move when our lease end in June. Elie peed once in the bathroom at the real estate office. He was mostly asleep and peed and pooped as soon as we got home at 6. Jer actually peed him when we got home since I was helping Yoav.

I used the Poquitos in the morning - I really like them! Elie peed in them yesterday and I washed by hand in the sink and dried with my spin dryer and then hung dry and they were completely dry in the morning. I still miss some poops and I'd rather not get poop on them. Sounds silly since they're just training pants, but they're so cute and perfect now ;)

Here's a pic of Elie in the Poquitos:

Poquitos

I didn't use the Poquitos today. I'm trying to decide if I should switch my Ms for Ls so I'll have a longer period of time I can use them. Today I used an old Motherease cloth dipe without a cover. It also has two snaps per side, so I got to see what it will be like with the Poquitos. We only had one miss so far today and that was when I left Elie in the bed while Yoav and I had breakfast -he woke up and peed before I got there. Serves me right for leaving him there alone ;)

Poquito Pants!

Not much new with our progress - we're having mostly no-miss days. Today we were out for most of the day and I've missed two pees, both while we were out.

The big news is that Jen & family got us Poquito Pants as a baby gift and they are AMAZING! They pretty much look like regular undies but they have side snaps and a really thick cotton pee/poop area and are supposed to hold one pee. I'm so excited to wash them and try them out.

Jer peed Elie again

Jer did it again - this time all the pee got in the potty! Elie had just woken from a nap and Jer positioned him and cued and Elie peed right away. Then I took him to nurse.

No misses today. Elie was actually totally dry for a 5 hour period - about an hour before we left for a birthday party until we got back home.

Saturday, February 23, 2008

Jeremy's first catch

Jer mostly caught his first pee today. His hand wasn't in the best position, so he got a lot of pee on himself LOL, but the timing was right and he cued all by himself!

Monday, February 18, 2008

48 Hours!

We made it 48 hours with the same prefold!! I got through 2 nights with no misses! Then he peed in his pfold when we went for bagels this morning. He had to go before we left but we were all bundled up and we were going with Jeremy before work, so I didn't have time to pee him and I guess he gave up when he saw we were going outside LOL. I used an old pair of Yoav's Under the Nile training pants for the rest of the day and just ordered a pair of Little Beetle trainers as well as a pair of wool underwear.

Sunday, February 17, 2008

36 Hours (and counting)

We're at 37 hours with the same prefold! I made it through the night last night without a problem. Elie slept naked under a blanket and I woke up without a problem each time he shifted to pee and he peed each time pretty quickly after he woke up. I peed him in bed in the BB insert rather than taking him to the bathroom - maybe taking him to the bathroom causes him to start nursing first instead of peeing first. Sometimes when I take him to the bathroom, I get impatient waiting for him to pee and give up, but last night, he always peed pretty much right away. There were 3 or 4 pees overnight and 12 pees and 2 poops so far during the day.

Saturday, February 16, 2008

Miss-free day

No misses today (so far - it's 9PM and I rarely have misses in the evening)! It was 13 pees and 3 poops and I got them all! I'm still using the same prefold I started the day with!! :)

Catching poops

For some reason, pee seems to be a lot easier for me than poops. Today I got every pee except one that happened on our way home from LLL, but I missed two poops (out of four)! Elie seems to be pooping several times a day in smaller amounts than he was a few weeks ago :( I'm thinking maybe I'm not giving him enough time to finish (when I do catch)...

EC Update - 10 Weeks

* Age of EC tot: 10 weeks

* We started at...1.5 weeks, cueing from birth

* Generally speaking we are doing...pretty well. If I'm able to focus, I can catch most pees/poops. He's pooping about twice a day now.

* How do you know your baby has to go / when do you offer baby a wee?

timing: Just after waking up, he likes to nurse and pee (usually he wants to nurse first). Generally, when he's awake, he pees about every 30 mins, a bit less in the evenings. However, he has gone for up to four hours when he's in a wrap (even if he's not asleep the whole time).

signs: he will fidget and not want to nurse. if I miss the fidgeting, he will sometimes start to cry.

* Is there a difference for poos and pees? What cues do you use?

I say psshhh for both pee and poop. I think the signs are very similar. He gets a little more squirmy for poop and sometimes I can feel his tummy rumbling before a poop or some gas ;)

* Which positions/receptacles do you use?

Insert for Baby Bjorn potty with my hand in position as an extra splash guard.

* Nappies, training pants or other?

Flats and prefolds with EC belt

* What are you doing away from home?

Same dipes but with a wool cover.

* What are you doing at night?

Generally now Elie sleeps diaper free on a bed consisting of a lambskin blanket, 1-2 towels, a soft thin baby blanket, a few prefolds in the pee area, then Elie, then a prefold over his penis and a wool blanket on top. If he pees on a pfold, I swap it out for another one/s. I have been mostly taking him to pee in the bathroom - either in the BB insert or tub so I can nurse him and pee him w/out (hopefully) waking up Yoav.

* Who takes baby to the toilet?

Me

* Catches or Misses - how many and what times are especially interesting?

Most days I only have 2-3 misses. At night, 0 misses to all. Some nights I'm less tired and can catch most pees, other nights, I'm so tired I miss them all. Also, sometimes I think/know he needs to go but don't want to/can't break from Yoav and he goes in the dipe.

* What's your next EC goal? (& how did you go with your last goal?)

I've done well on the last goal - I do a lot of diaper free time at home or at least just w/ a pfold around him, like when he's in a wrap, so I don't risk getting poop on a nice wrap! He is almost always diaper free at night. See above.

Current goal is to catch more at night.

Another public pee

We were at Whole Foods this afternoon and Elie woke up from his nap (in a wrap) and started fidgeting soon after. When we were in line, he started crying. I knew he had to pee and thought I'd try to make it to the bathroom. I left Jer in line w/ the groceries and ran upstairs to the bathroom. There was one woman in front of us (who didn't offer to let us go first even though Elie was crying - humph!). Anyway, we went into the stall, the dipe was dry, and he peed right away in the toilet. As he was peeing, he stopped crying and a little smile of relief came over his face :)

It's 5PM and, so far today, we've had no misses!

A poopy mess at Suzuki class

Today we had a mess at the Suzuki class. When we arrived, we all went potty - I peed, Yoav peed and Elie peed. Elie's signals for poop and pee are generally about the same and I didn't realize he had to poop also, so after he peed, I was holding him w/ his tush on my arm while I pulled up my pants and got adjusted and he pooped on my shirt sleeve! Luckily my friend Y was in the bathroom w/ E and C and she held Elie for a moment while I got my pants up and cleaned the floor :) I just wiped off my shirt and rolled the shirt sleeve up for class...

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

24 hours with only 1 miss!

Made it 24 hours with just one miss (which was a pee during the night)!

Monday, February 4, 2008

Elie only peed in a dipe once today and that was on the bus back from the Natural History Museum. Can't get him to sleep (it's 1:30am) , but at least our ECing is going well ;)

Sunday, February 3, 2008

Lots of diaper free time

Elie has been diaper free a lot more at home lately. I'm catching most pees/poops. Jer doesn't even seem bothered by it anymore - I think b/c I'm rarely getting peed on...

Using the BB insert with my hand as a pee-guard is working really well - I keep most of the pee in the insert that way.

Long period of dryness / receptacle

Today was Yoav's first Suzuki music class. I peed Elie before we left at 12:30. While we were gone, he mostly slept in the wrap, but he woke to nurse once and cried a little and nursed on the way home. When we arrived home, Elie's diaper wwas dry! I took him to pee in the bathtub and he peed and pooped right away.

On the receptacle issue, I've found a solution for the Bjorn potty insert - I put my hand just in front on the pee guard. Other than getting pee on my hand, this works perfectly!

Monday, January 28, 2008

8 Weeks

Today I caught all pees/poops from 8AM until 3:30PM. Over a 14 hour period, I missed 3 and caught 15. Not bad.

Main signals are: Fidgety; Fussy; Crying; If sleeping prior to peeing, sometimes he just wakes and pees and other times he nurses first and then pees a few minutes later.
Signals are really the same for pees and poops except that for a poop, Elie *tends* to be more agitated and sometimes passes gas.

Occasionally, I really see no signals for pees and I miss. These times, he seems very calm and relaxed to me and I really do not pick up on any signals (yet). Once today, he seemed to pee in his sleep, but he must have awoken and peed without any obvious signals.

These are my detailed notes for today (misses are labeled as such). I held him all day.
fidgety, fussy
9:02AM - pee
agitated
9:32AM - pee

Pottied in a public toilet

Today was Elie's first time pottying in a public toilet. We went to a birthday party at a Krazy City in a mall and when we got there, I went to the bathroom to change Elie assuming I would just change a wet diaper, but it was dry! It had been about 3 hours since he'd last peed. I took Elie into a stall and held him over a toilet in potty position. He peed and pooped!

Friday, January 25, 2008

Forced me to pee him

Today at my friend Mo's house, Elie got fussy and didn't want to nurse and wasn't gassy. I felt funny going to the bathroom to pee him, though I suspected that's what he needed. But he continued to fuss/wiggle in the wrap until I finally went to the bathroom and he peed right away in the toilet. It was the first time I actually wanted him to pee in a diaper and he sort of pushed me to take him to pee in the potty.

18 hours miss-free

We went 18 hours straight today without a miss - I think it's a record for us.

Diaper Free Night - No Misses!!

Today I was inspired by a woman on the AlwaysUnschooled list to try a diaper free night. Her blog is here:
http://www.freewebs.com/ohthethinksyoucanthink/nappyfreebaby06mo.htm

Jeremy's traveling, so I decided to try going diaper free for a night. I got Elie's spot on the bed ready with my Bowron lambskin on the bottom, then a blanket, then a few prefolds, but he ended up sleeping on my tummy because I was really tired and couldn't get him to sleep any other way. I'm sure him sleeping on my tummy made the ECing easier. I peed him in bed into
the BB insert and then dumped the pee into a bowl on the side table so the insert would be ready for next time. Each time he peed, I'd make the pssshh noise quietly into his ear.

EC Update - 5 Weeks

* Age of EC tot: 5 weeks

* We started at...1.5 weeks, cueing from birth

* Generally speaking we are doing...pretty well. If I'm able to
focus, I can catch most pees/poops. He's only pooping once or twice a
day now (just in the past few days it went down from about five
times/day!) so that's making the poops a lot easier. And since there
isn't little bits of poops on dipes, I'm using a lot less dipes. Went
through about four dipes today - I've been using the same one for most
of the afternoon (it's 7pm now).

* How do you know your baby has to go / when do you offer baby a wee?

timing: Just after waking up, he likes to nurse and pee.

signs: he will cry and not want to nurse - since he mostly nurses,
sleeps and pees/poops, if he is awake and doesn't want to nurse, it's
often because he has to pee or poop

* Is there a difference for poos and pees? What cues do you use?

I say psshhh for both pee and poop. I think the signs are the same
but a little more upset when he has to poop

* Which positions/receptacles do you use?

Insert for Baby Bjorn potty

* Nappies, training pants or other?

Flats and prefolds with EC belt

* What are you doing away from home?

Haven't been away much - used the same dipes but with a wool cover.

* What are you doing at night?

Same diaper system - taking him to pee (some) in the bathtub; often
too tired and he pees in the diaper and I change it as soon as I
notice.

* Who takes baby to the toilet?

Me and Jeremy has tried a few times - got the timing right, but never
got Elie to pee/poop yet.

* Catches or Misses - how many and what times are especially interesting?

Sometimes I think he needs to go but don't want to/can't break from
Yoav and he goes in the dipe. Also, sometimes I have a problem
whereby I don't hold him in a comfortable enough position and he
doesn't fully empty his bladder and then he pees some more a few
minutes later once I put a diaper on him :(

* What's your next EC goal? (& how did you go with your last goal?)

I want to spend more diaper free time. Now I do some diaper free in
the evenings. I tried twice diaper free at night, but it was too
stressful for me - I didn't get enough sleep and he wet through a few
towels that I then had to add to the laundry...
